On the 8th of March 2021, the Peruvian Secretary General adopted Resolution Nº 028-2021, creating the functional Unit for Environmental Crime (UNIDA) within the Ministry of the Environment. The Unit will mainly coordinate with the National Environmental Management System and the judicial system to improve the prevention, reduction and follow-up of environmental crimes and infractions.
Resolution Nº 028-2021 contains several functions of the Unit for Environmental Crime, which include developing strategic analyses on the commission of environmental crime, collaborate with relevant entities in the response to environmental crime, propose guidelines on the development of public policies on environmental crime and assist in the implementation of measures or the recognition and protection of environmental defenders.
