“MONTERREY, NL, December 22 (EL UNIVERSAL) – The Undersecretary for Human Rights, Population and Migration of the Ministry of the Interior, Alejandro Encinas Rodríguez, admitted that reducing impunity for crimes such as murders and other attacks on journalists and human rights defenders continues to be the biggest obstacle to overcoming the humanitarian crisis and violations of fundamental rights that the country has been suffering since the last quarter of 2006.

During a ceremony for the signing of a coordination and cooperation agreement which, on behalf of the federal government, he signed with the government of Nuevo León on the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, Encinas Rodríguez stressed that as long as those who commit this type of serious antisocial and criminal behaviour are not punished, there will be a margin of undue tolerance. He affirmed that in addition to achieving greater coordination between authorities at the three levels of government, it is necessary to strengthen the response capacities of all the institutions of the Mexican State, “to face one of the most serious problems that we continue to face in the country: violence, aggression and the risk faced by those who exercise journalistic work and the right to defend human rights”.”
