In January 2022, discussions on a general law for the protection of human rights defenders in Mexico were renewed. Discussions will be held in Chihuahua, Mexico City, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Sonora, Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
The aim is to create a national protection system and define the competencies of the different levels of government and public institutions, says Undersecretary Alejandro Encinas Rodríguez. “Currently, the federal system that we have has allowed local authorities to ignore their responsibilities, so in those cases where any authority is responsible, the national system has the functions and powers to initiate criminal proceedings against those who violate the law and violate these rights,” he said.
