The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the national human rights institution of Kenya, has developed a model policy and action plan for human rights defenders which aims to provide a framework for recognition, protection and support of HRDs in the context of their work.
The policy recognizes and reaffirms the critical role of HRDs in the promotion and protection of human rights in Kenya and the need for the state to fulfill its mandate to provide a safe and secure legislative and operating environment.
The document contains an overview of the legal framework regarding the protection of HRDs in Kenya. Moreover, the policy contains a section with concrete recommendations for actions for specific concerns identified by the KNCHR. Finally, the model policy and action plan provide an implementation plan.
